Do children have to pay for a parent to be in a nursing home?
This is a tough question simply because it involves a lot of minefields that can ordinarily be avoided if you have good sound legal advice. Ordinarily, children should not have to help pay for the care of a parent in a nursing home. However, there are those minefields I mentioned which have you signed as a child any type of agreement with the nursing home which would obligate you personally to pay for the care. If you have then you may be stuck paying for your parent's care. Simple legal advice with a qualified elder law attorney would avoid you having to do something as severe as putting your assets on the line to help pay for the cost of care for your own parent.
